Last week the high-horned red cow finally calved. Baby was solid red like mama. I sat there the next day a’horseback and studied him for a few minutes. Long enough to figure out it was a bull calf and getting’ plenty to eat. Satisfied, I swung away and started back through the mesquite on a cow trail. I heard a mama bawlin’ and looked back to see that it was the high-horned red cow. I swept the horizon for her calf, then looked down. There he was right behind my horse’s hind leg trailin’ along with us. I stopped. The little calf bumped into my stirrup. He looked confused. He could hear his mama but something didn’t smell right. I reached down and patted his head. He looked up at me, as if to say, “What are you doin’ here?”

Early one summer morning J.T. loaded his good dog, Sam, and headed down to the wheat field. It had been cut and he planned on balin’ some wheat straw as long as it still held the dew.

Newcastle and the Hunter Valley have been vital to the development of the Australian mining industry since its birth, and the region remains a key player today.  

We were watching The History Channel at Grandma’s casita. It was a story about the USS Enterprise being attacked. It was 1945. They were describing acts of heroism that occurred. Stories of men risking their lives, staying with wounded comrades instead of swimming to safety. Stories that never made the paper or were recognized but were remembered only by those brave souls who dog-paddled in the waves next to a burning ship 3 miles above the sea floor.
